About 90 seconds a mark: how to time an A Math, E Math or Chemistry paper
Method & Mark ·
Every O-Level maths paper gives about a minute and a half for each mark. That one figure is the most useful thing a student can carry into the hall: a 5-mark question is worth seven and a half minutes, and no more. Below are the numbers for each paper, and how we train students to use them.
The papers
| Paper | Time | Marks | Per mark |
|---|---|---|---|
| A Math 4049, Paper 1 | 2 h 15 min | 90 | 90 s |
| A Math 4049, Paper 2 | 2 h 15 min | 90 | 90 s |
| E Math 4052, Paper 1 | 2 h 15 min | 90 | 90 s |
| E Math 4052, Paper 2 | 2 h 15 min | 90 | 90 s |
| Chemistry 6092, Paper 1 (MCQ) | 1 h | 40 | 90 s |
| Chemistry 6092, Paper 2 | 1 h 45 min | 80 | about 80 s |
These are the 2026 O-Level syllabuses. Both maths syllabuses add the same warning under the scheme of assessment: “Omission of essential working will result in loss of marks.” So the time is for writing the working, not only for finding the answer.
Turning it into a budget
- Read the marks before the question. The number in brackets is the time allowance. A [2] that has taken five minutes is costing marks elsewhere.
- Over budget: write the method line and move on. Method marks do not need the final answer. Setting dy/dx = 0, or writing the equation you would solve, can still earn the M1 while you come back later for the A1.
- Keep the spare minutes for checking. Short questions often take less than their allowance. Bank that time for rereading the questions where marks are most often dropped: rejected roots, units and accuracy.
- Practise against a clock before it counts. Knowing a method and producing it in 90 seconds a mark are different skills. We set timed sections from Term 2, well before the prelims.
