O-Level results 2026: how to calculate L1R5 and L1R4, and what comes next
Method & Mark · · Updated
L1R5 is English (or Higher Mother Tongue) plus the best humanities subject, the best maths or science subject, the best remaining subject from either group, and the two best of everything else. Lower is better, and a gross L1R5 of 20 or less is needed for junior college. Millennia Institute uses L1R4, and from 2028 junior colleges switch to L1R4 too, with a cut-off of 16. The 2026 O-Level results are tentatively due between 13 and 15 January 2027, and the JAE opens that afternoon for six days. The calculator below works out all three scores from a student’s grades.
The dates
- Results
- Tentatively 13 to 15 January 2027. SEAB confirms the date once marking is complete. Last year’s results came out on Wednesday 14 January 2026 at 2pm.
- JAE applications
- Six calendar days, from 4pm on results day to 4.30pm on the sixth day.
- JAE posting results
- Tentatively 9am on Tuesday 2 February 2027, online and by SMS.
- Reporting
- Students posted to a junior college or Millennia Institute report on the morning of Wednesday 3 February 2027 (tentative). Polytechnics send enrolment instructions by the end of February.
This is the last O-Level cohort. From 2027, Sec 4 students sit the Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate (SEC) instead, and admissions move from the JAE to a new exercise MOE calls PSE. What changes with the SEC.
How students get their results
- School candidates collect them at school from the release time on results day. Schools send the collection arrangements beforehand.
- A proxy can collect instead. Tell the school in advance; the proxy brings the documents the school asks for.
- The JAE form arrives by email. Last year, eligible candidates received a digital copy of the JAE form, which lists their aggregate scores, from 2.45pm on results day. It can also be downloaded during the application period.
- Private candidates see results online on SEAB’s Candidates Portal, with Singpass. Last year the portal showed results from 2.45pm on results day until 11pm two weeks later.
What the grades mean
Each subject is graded A1, A2, B3, B4, C5, C6, D7, E8 or F9. The number in each grade is its points: A1 is 1 point, B4 is 4, F9 is 9. Admissions add up the points from a set of subjects, so a lower total is better. For a sense of scale, 86.9% of the 22,468 candidates in 2025 scored C6 or better in five or more subjects.
SEAB does not publish the marks each grade needs, so a percentage cannot be turned into a grade with certainty.
How L1R5 is calculated
L1R5 stands for First Language plus five Relevant subjects. Each slot can only be filled from certain subjects, and each subject can be used once. MOE’s rules for the 2027 JAE:
| Slot | Filled by |
|---|---|
| L1 | English Language or a Higher Mother Tongue Language |
| R1 | The best humanities subject |
| R2 | The best mathematics or science subject |
| R3 | The best remaining humanities, mathematics or science subject |
| R4, R5 | The two best remaining subjects of any kind |
What counts as what is MOE’s list, not the school’s timetable:
- Humanities
- Geography, History, Literature (English, Chinese, Malay or Tamil), every Combined Humanities (Social Studies with an elective), Higher Art, Higher Music, Chinese or Malay (Special Programme), Bahasa Indonesia.
- Mathematics
- Mathematics (E Math) and Additional Mathematics (A Math).
- Science
- Physics, Chemistry, Biology and every Combined Science.
- Others
- Mother Tongue and Higher Mother Tongue, Art, Music, Computing, Principles of Accounts, Economics, Design & Technology, Nutrition & Food Science and the rest. These can only fill R4 and R5.
Three rules catch people out. Religious Knowledge can never be counted. Higher Mother Tongue and Mother Tongue in the same language cannot both be used, so if Higher Chinese is L1, Chinese cannot be R4. And to be eligible for junior college at all, a student needs English at C6 or better, E Math or A Math at D7 or better, and a Mother Tongue at D7 or better (E8 for Higher Mother Tongue), whatever the total.
Working out an L1R5, step by step
Take a student with these seven results: English B3, Chinese A2, E Math A1, A Math A2, Pure Chemistry B4, Physics B3 and Combined Humanities C5.
Combined Humanities is the student’s only humanities subject, so it must fill R1 even though C5 is the weakest grade. E Math and A Math are the two best maths and science grades, so they take R2 and R3. The two best of what is left are Chinese and Physics. Pure Chemistry, at B4, is not counted.
The check: 16 is under 20, English is C6 or better, E Math is D7 or better and Chinese is D7 or better, so the student is eligible. With 2 bonus points for an Excellent CCA grade, the net L1R5 used for posting is 14.
How L1R4 is calculated, now and from 2028
L1R4 is one subject shorter, and there are two versions of it.
| Slot | Millennia Institute, 2027 JAE | JC and MI, from 2028 |
|---|---|---|
| L1 | English or Higher Mother Tongue | English or Higher Mother Tongue |
| R1 | Best humanities, maths or science subject | Best humanities subject |
| R2 | Next best humanities, maths or science subject | Best maths or science subject |
| R3 | Best remaining subject | Best remaining humanities, maths or science subject |
| R4 | Next best remaining subject | Best remaining subject |
| To be eligible | Gross 20 or less | Gross 16 or less for JC, 20 or less for MI, with every subject at G3 or O-Level |
| Bonus points | Up to 4 | Up to 3 |
The 2028 version keeps the humanities slot and drops one free choice, which is why it is the score current Sec 3 students should learn. It applies to the first SEC cohort, who sit their papers in 2027 and apply in January 2028. It does not apply to anyone getting O-Level results in January 2027.
The same seven grades give three different numbers:
The 2027 MI score can skip the C5 because its first two relevant slots accept maths or science. The 2028 score cannot, and that one slot costs the student 2 points.
L1R5 and L1R4 calculator
Enter each O-Level grade. The calculator tries every legal way of filling the slots and keeps the lowest total, as the rules intend. It runs in your browser and sends nothing anywhere.
The calculator does not cover the Language Elective Programme bonus or conditional admission, and it treats every subject as O-Level. Check the JAE form’s own figures on results day.
Bonus points
Bonus points come off the gross score to give the net score that posting ranks by. Eligibility is judged on the gross score, before bonus points.
| Bonus | Points |
|---|---|
| CCA grade Excellent | 2 |
| CCA grade Good | 1 |
| English and Higher Mother Tongue both C6 or better | 2 |
| Chinese or Malay (Special Programme), or Bahasa Indonesia, C6 or better | 2 |
| Affiliated JC as 1st choice, or 1st and 2nd | 2, on those choices only |
| Cap | 4 in the 2027 JAE; 3 from 2028 |
Affiliation points are for junior college choices only, and not for private candidates. A Language Elective Programme at a JC can add 2 more on top of the cap, for students selected into it.
ELR2B2 for polytechnic
Polytechnics use ELR2B2: English, two subjects relevant to the course, and the two best other subjects, with CCA bonus points taken off. A net ELR2B2 of 26 or less is needed to be considered, 28 for Nursing. Courses are grouped into four types, ELR2B2-A to D (broadly humanities and media, business, science and engineering, and design), and each type has its own list of relevant subjects. Many courses also set a minimum grade, often grade 6 or better in A Math or E Math. Each course’s type and requirements are in MOE’s 2027 JAE course list and on CourseFinder.
Where a score lands
Previous-year net ranges show where past students were admitted, the same way secondary school cut-off points do after PSLE. A few 2026 JAE ranges from MOE’s 2027 course list:
| Junior college | Arts | Science |
|---|---|---|
| Hwa Chong Institution | 2 to 5 | 2 to 3 |
| National Junior College | 4 to 8 | 2 to 6 |
| Anglo-Chinese Junior College | 4 to 9 | 2 to 7 |
| Catholic Junior College | 5 to 12 | 6 to 11 |
| Jurong Pioneer Junior College | 9 to 14 | 4 to 14 |
| Yishun Innova Junior College | 5 to 20, with places left | 9 to 18 |
| Millennia Institute (L1R4) | 10 to 20 | 9 to 20, with places left |
The student above, with a net L1R5 of 14, would have met the 2026 cut-off for the Science course at Jurong Pioneer and Yishun Innova, but not at the others. Ranges move from year to year, and MOE adds the 2027 ranges to SchoolFinder on posting results day.
Why the maths grades move the number most
For most students, E Math and A Math fill two of the five relevant slots, because they are the only maths subjects and the sciences compete for the same places. A drop in one of them does not just cost its own points: it pushes a weaker subject into the score. If the student above had C6 in A Math instead of A2, Physics would move up to R3 and Pure Chemistry would come in at R5:
A net 16 is outside every Science range in the table except Yishun Innova’s. Maths is also one of the grade requirements, so a D7 is the floor for junior college whatever the total. For a student still a year or two from the paper, the cheapest points are usually the ones a script loses through method marks and timing, not new topics.
If a grade looks wrong
School candidates can appeal through their school during the appeal period announced on results day; private candidates appeal on the Candidates Portal. An appeal is a review of the marking of the scripts and a full clerical re-check. SEAB announces the fee for each subject during the results exercise, and late applications are not accepted. The outcome comes back through the school, with no report on the student’s performance.
What to do in the six days
- Work out every score you are eligible to use. The JAE form gives the aggregates, but check the subjects in each one against the rules above, or with the calculator.
- Compare with last year’s ranges on SchoolFinder for junior colleges and CourseFinder for polytechnic and ITE courses. Choose a mix, some close to the score and some comfortably above it.
- Talk to the school’s Education and Career Guidance counsellor. MOE also runs online and phone counselling through the ECG Centre.
- Submit before 4.30pm on the last day. Late choices are not accepted.
